General Statements about His
Mission
[Quoting from Isaiah:]
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
Because he anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor:
He hath sent me to proclaim release to the captives,
And recovering of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty them that are bruised,
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.
l0418-9
[To Pilate:] My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this
world, them would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the
Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
[Art thou a king then?]
Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end have I been born, and to this end
am I come into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth.
j1836-7
What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth, from whom do they receive
toll or tribute? from their sons, or from strangers?
[From strangers.]
Therefore the sons are free. But, lest we cause them to stumble, go thou to
the sea, and cast a hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and
when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a sheckel: that take, and
give unto them for me and thee.
m1725-7
I came to cast fire upon the earth; and what will I, if it is already
kindled? But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened
till it be accomplished! 1249-50
Think not that I came to send peace on the earth: I came not to send peace,
but a sword.
m1034/l1151
Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to
destroy, but to fulfil. m0517
I am not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.
l0532/m0913/k0217
I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three
days, and have nothing to eat: and if I send them away fasting to their
home, they will faint in the way; and some of them are come from far.
k0802-3/m1532
For verily the Son of man came not to be
ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. k1045/l2227/m2028
Ye call me, Master, and, Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, the
Lord and the Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one
another's feet.
j1313-4
Mission to Suffer
The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders
and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day raised up.
l0922/k0831/m1621
Even so shall the Son of man also suffer ....
m1712/k0912
But first must he suffer many things and be rejected of this generation. l1725
O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have
spoken! Behoved it not the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into
his glory?
l2425-6
Howbeit I must go on my way to-day and to-morrow and the day following: for
it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.
l1333
The Son of man shall be delivered up into the hands of men; and they shall
kill him, and the third day he shall be raised up.
m1722-3/l0944/k0931
Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise again from the
dead the third day; and that repentance and remission of sins should be
preached in his name unto all the
nations, beginning from Jerusalem. l2446-7
