[The tempter: If thou art the Son of
God, command that these stones become bread.]
It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that
proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
[Then the devil taketh him into the holy city; and he set him on the
pinnacle of the temple:
If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written,
He shall give his angels charge concerning thee:
And on their hands they shall bear thee up,
Lest haply thou dash thy foot against a stone.]
Again it is written, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
[Again, the devil taketh him unto an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth
him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.]
Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy
God, and him only shalt thou serve.

[The Pharisees: This man doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the
prince of the devils.]
Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every
city or house divided against itself shall not stand: and if Satan casteth
out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then shall his kingdom stand?
And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out?
therefore shall they be your judges. But if I by the Spirit of God cast out
devils, then is the kingdom of God come upon you.

[The Jews: Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil.]
I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me.
j0848-9
[From that time began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go
unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and
scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up. And Peter took him,
and began to rebuke him:]
[Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall never be unto thee.]
Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art a stumblingblock unto me: for thou
mindest not the things of God, but the things of men.
m1621-3/k0831-3
And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to
pass, ye may believe. I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of
the world cometh: and he hath nothing in me; but that the world may know
that I love the Father, and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do.
Arise, let us go hence.
j1429-31
These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be made to stumble.
They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that
whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God. And
these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye
may remember them, how that I told you.j 1601-4
.... but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
l2253
In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the
world.

False Christs
[To the Jews:] I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if
another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
j0543
Take heed that no man lead you astray. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall lead many astray.
m2404-5/l2108/k1305-6
Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is the Christ, or, Here;
believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and
shall shew great signs and wonders; so as to lead astray, if possible, even
the elect. m2423-4/l1723/k1321-2
