11 Parables about Himself (cont'd)
Returning from Another Country (cont'd)
The Faithful and Wise Steward
It is as when a man, sojourning in another country, having left his house,
and given authority to his servants, to each one his work, commanded also
the porter to watch. Watch therefore: for ye know not when the lord of the
house cometh, whether at even, or at midnight, or at cock-crowing, or in the
morning; lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you
I say unto all, Watch.

[Peter: Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even unto all?]
Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall set over his
household, to give them their portion of food in due season? Blessed is that
servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Of a truth I say
unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath. But if that servant
shall say in his heart, My Lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat
the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be
drunken; the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not,
and in an hour when he knoweth not, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint
his portion with the unfaithful. And that servant, which knew his lord's
will, and made not ready, nor did according to his will, shall be beaten
with many stripes; but he that knew not, and did things worthy of stripes,
shall be beaten with few stripes. And to whomsoever much is given, of him
shall much be required: and to whom they commit much, of him will they ask
the more.

The Return from the Marriage Feast
Let your loins be girded about, and your lamps burning; and be ye yourselves
like unto men looking for their lord, when he shall return from the marriage
feast; that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may straightway open unto
him. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find
watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them
sit down to meat, and shall come and serve them. And if he shall come in the
second watch, and if in the third, and find them so, blessed are those
servants. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what
hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have left his
house to be broken through. Be ye also ready: for in an hour that ye think
not the Son of man cometh.

The Ten Virgins
Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took
their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were
foolish, and five were wise. For the foolish, when they took their lamps,
took no oil with them: but the wise took oil in their vessels with their
lamps. Now while the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. But
at midnight there is a cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come ye forth to meet
him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish
said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out. But
the wise answered, saying, Peradventure there will not be enough for us and
you: go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they
went away to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with
him to the marriage feast: and the door was shut. Afterward come also the
other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said,
Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know not the
day nor the hour.

The Sheep and the Goats
But when the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the angels with
him, then shall he sit on the throne of his glory: and before him shall be
gathered all the nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as
the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats: and he shall set the sheep
on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto
them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom
prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was an hungred, and
ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and
ye took me in; naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I
was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him,
saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or athirst, and
gave thee drink? And when saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or
naked, and clothed thee? And when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came
unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto
you, Inasmuch as ye did it unto one of these my brethren, even these least,
ye did it unto me. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart
from me, ye cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil
and his angels: for I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty,
and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and
ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall
they also answer, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or
a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did
it not unto one of these least, ye did it not unto me. And these shall go
away into eternal punishment: but the righteous into eternal life.
