14 Dialogues with Individuals (cont'd)

[The Rich Young Man:  Master, what good thing shall I do , that I may have eternal life?]

Why askest thou me concerning that which is good? One there is who is good: but if thou wouldest enter into life, keep the commandments.
[Which?]
Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
[All these things have I observed: what lack I yet?]
If thou wouldest be perfect, go, sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
[But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sorrowful: for he was one that had great possessions.]

Dialogues with those Individuals Deemed to be Sinners
Give me to drink.
[The Samaritan woman: How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a Samaritan woman?]
If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
[Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his sons, and his cattle?]
Every one that drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up unto eternal life.
[Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come all the way hither to draw.]
Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
[I have no husband.]
Thou saidst well, I have no husband: for thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: this hast thou said truly.
[Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.]
Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father. Ye worship that which ye know not: we worship that which we know: for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such doth the Father seek to be his worshippers. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
[I know that Messiah cometh (which is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things.]
I that speak unto thee am he.                                                                                                                                                       j0407-26

Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house.
[All: He is gone in to lodge with a man that is a sinner.]
[Zacchaeus: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have wrongfully exacted aught of any man, I restore fourfold.]
Today is salvation come to this house, forasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save that which was lost.                                                                                                                                                                             l1905-10

The Woman who washed his feet.
[The Pharisees: This man, if he were a prophet, would have perceived who and what manner of woman this is which toucheth him, that she is a sinner.]
Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee.
[Master, say on.]
A certain lender had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. When they had not wherewith to pay, he forgave them both. Which of them therefore will love him most?
[He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the most.]
Thou hast rightly judged.
[And turning to the woman, he said unto Simon,] Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath wetted my feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair. Thou gavest me no kiss: but she, since the time I came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but she hath anointed my feet with ointment. Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
[To the woman:] Thy sins are forgiven.                                                                                                                                         l0739-48
