                                                                                    6 THE FORCES OF EVIL

[The Seventy: Lord, even the devils are subject unto us in thy name.]
I beheld Satan fallen as lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall in any wise hurt you.                                                                                                           l1017-9

[To His brethren:] The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.                                   j0707

[To the disciples:] If the world hateth you, ye know that it hath hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love its own: but because ye are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.                     j1518-9

Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou mindest not the things of God, but the things of men.                                                 k0833/m1623

[The tempter: If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.]
It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
[The devil taketh him into the holy city; and he set him on the pinnacle of the temple: If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written,
He shall give his angels charge concerning thee:
And on their hands they shall bear thee up,
Lest haply thou dash thy foot against a stone.]
Again it is written, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
[The devil taketh him unto an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.]
Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.               m0403-10/l0403-8

And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.                                                                                                   m0613

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.                                    k1438/m2641

Enter ye in by the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many be they that enter in thereby.                                                                                                                                                                                 m0713/l1324

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.                                                                                                                                           m0624/l1613

[His disciples: Rabbi, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he should be born blind?]
Neither did this man sin, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.                                             j0902-3

And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan had bound, lo, these eighteen years, to have been loosed from this bond on the day of the sabbath?                                                                                                                                                 l1316

Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat: but I made supplication for thee, that thy faith fail not: and do thou, when once thou hast turned again, stablish thy brethren.                                                                                          l2231-2

I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world cometh: and he hath nothing in me; ....                                            j1430

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you. And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgement: of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more; of judgement, because the prince of this world hath been judged.                                                                                                                     j1607-11
