8 CONDUCT (cont'd)
7 Commandment to Love
A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; even as I
have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know
that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
j1334-5
Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine
enemy: m0543
But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them that hate
you, bless them that curse you, pray for them that despitefully use you. To
him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and from him
that taketh away thy cloke withold not thy coat also. Give to every one that
asketh thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. And
as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. And if
ye love them that love you, what thank have ye? for even sinners love those
that love them. And if ye do good to them that do good to you, what thank
have ye? for even sinners do the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye
hope to receive, what thank have ye? even sinners lend to sinners, to
receive again as much. But love your enemies, and do them good, and lend,
never despairing; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of
the Most High: for he is kind towards
the unthankful and evil.

If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and
he shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you forever, even
the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it beholdeth him
not, neither knoweth him: ye know him; for he abideth with you, and shall be
in you. I will not leave you desolate: I come unto you. Yet a little while,
and the world beholdeth me no more; but ye behold me: because I live, ye
shall live also. In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in
me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is
that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I
will love him, and will manifest myself unto him.
[Judas (not Iscariot): Lord, what is come to pass that thou wilt manifest
thyself unto us, and not unto the world?]
If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we
will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not
keepeth not my words: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the
Father's who sent me.
j1415-24
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you
rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in
heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my
burden is light.
m1128-30
Even as the Father hath loved me, I also have loved you: abide ye in my
love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have
kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I
spoken unto you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be
fulfilled. This is my commandment, that ye love one another, even as I have
loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life
for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do the things which I command you.
No longer do I call you servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord
doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I heard from my
Father I have made known unto you. Ye did not choose me, but I chose you,
and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit
should abide: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may
give it you. These things I command you, that ye love one another.
j1509-17
[A certain lawyer: Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?]
What is written in the law? how readest thou?
[Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul,
and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as
thyself.]
Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
[And who is my neighbour?]
The Good Samaritan
A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho; and he fell among
robbers, which both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him
half dead. And by chance a certain priest was going down that way: and when
he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And in like manner a Levite
also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side.
But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw
him, he was moved with compassion, and came to him, and bound up his wounds,
pouring on them oil and wine; and he set him on his own beast, and brought
him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow he took out two
pence, and gave them to the host, and said, Take care of him; and whatsoever
thou spendest more, I, when I come back again, will repay thee. Which of
these three, thinkest thou, proved neighbour unto him that fell among the
robbers?
[He that shewed mercy on him.]
Go, and do thou likewise.
