8 CONDUCT (cont'd)
10 Money (cont'd)
[Certain of the Pharisees and of
the Herodians: Master, we know that thou art true, and carest not for any
one: for thou regardest not the person of men, but of a truth teachest the
way of God: Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? Shall we give,
or shall we not give?]
Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.
Whose is this image and superscription?
[Caesar's.]
Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things
that are God's.
k1214-7/m2217-21/l2022-5
[And he sat down over against the treasury, and beheld how the multitude cast money into the treasury: and
many that were rich cast in much.
And there came a poor widow, and she cast in two mites, which make a
farthing.]
Verily I say unto you, This poor widow cast in more than all they which are
casting into the treasury: for they all did cast in of their superfluity;
but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her
living. k1241-4/l2101-4
But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith
thou mightest have been profited by me is given to God; he shall not honour
his father.
m1505-6/k0711
[A certain ruler: Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?]
Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, even God. Thou knowest the
commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear
false witness, Honour thy father and mother.
[All these things have I observed from my youth up.]
One thing thou lackest yet: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the
poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
[But when he heard these things, he became exceeding sorrowful; for he was
very rich.]
How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! For it
is easier for a camel to enter in through a needle's eye, than for a rich
man to enter into the kingdom of God.
l1818-25/m1916-24/k1017-25
Sell that ye have, and give alms; make for yourselves purses which wax not
old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, .....
l1233
Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn
not thou away.
m0542/l0630
And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? even
sinners lend to sinners, to receive again as much.
l0634
Take heed that ye do not your righteousness before men, to be seen of them:
else ye have no reward with your Father which is in heaven.
When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the
hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory
of men. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward. But when
thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: that
thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret shall
recompense thee.
m0601-4
11 Fast
[The disciples of John: Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy
disciples fast not?]
Can the sons of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with
them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from
them, and then will they fast.
m0914-5/k0218-20/l0533-5
Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for
they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen of men to fast. Verily I
say unto you, They have received their reward. But thou, when thou fastest,
anoint thy head, and wash thy face; that thou be not seen of men to fast,
but of thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret,
shall recompense thee.
