9 THE FAMILY (cont'd)
2 Kindred
A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and among his
own kin, and in his own house.
k0604/m1357/l0424
[One of the multitude: Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without,
seeking to speak to thee.]
Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?
[And he stretched forth his hand towards his disciples:]
Behold, my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my
Father which is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.
m1247-50/k0332-35/l0820-21
[A certain woman out of the multitude: Blessed is the womb that bare thee,
and the breasts which thou didst suck.]
Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
l1127-8
[Peter: Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.]
Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or
sisters, or mother, or father, or children, or lands, for my sake, and for
the gospel's sake, but he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time,
houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands,
with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.
k1028-30/m1928-29/l1828-30
And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. l1420
And brother shall deliver up brother to death, and the father his child: and
children shall rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.
m1021/k1312/l2116
Think not that I came to send peace on the earth: I came not to send peace,
but a sword. For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the
daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in
law: and a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth
father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or
daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that doth not take his
cross and follow after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life
shall lose it; and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
m1034-9/l1251-53&l1426-7
For God said, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, He that speaketh evil
of father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say
to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited
by me is given to God; he shall not honour his father. And ye have made void
the word of God because of your tradition.
m1504-6/l0710-13
[His disciples: Rabbi, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he should
be born blind?]
Neither did this man sin, nor his parents: but that the works of God should
be made manifest in him. We must work the works of him that sent me, while
it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
j0902-4
But woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in
those days!
