2   Prayer and Vocation (cont'd)

It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer: but ye make it a den of robbers.                               m2113/l1946/k1117/j0216

[To James and John:] What would ye that I should do for you?
[James and John: Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and one on thy left hand, in thy glory.]
Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink the cup that I drink? or to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
[We are able.]
The cup that I drink ye shall drink; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: but to sit on my right hand or on my left hand is not mine to give: but it is for them for whom it hath been prepared.                                                       k1036-40/m2021-3

There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, and regarded not man: and there was a widow in that city; and she came oft unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest she wear me out by her continual coming.
Hear what the unrighteous judge saith.                                                                                                                                           l1802-6

4 Cries for help
[A Canaanitish woman: Lord help me.]
It is not meet to take the children's bread and cast it to the dogs.
[Yea, Lord: for even the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.]
O woman, great is thy faith: be it done unto thee even as thou wilt.                                                                               m1525-8/k0727-9

[Peter, as he began to sink after walking on the water: Lord, save me.]
O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?                                                                                                                          m1430-1

                                                                                                     o - O - o

Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. But of that day or that hour knoweth no one, not even the angels in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.                  k1331-3/l2136

[To the Disciples at Gethsemane:] Sit ye here, while I go yonder and pray.
[To Peter, James and John:] My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: abide ye here, and watch with me.
O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass away from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.
[To Peter:] What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
[To the Disciples:] Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
O my Father, if this cannot pass away, except I drink it, thy will be done.                                                        m2636-42/k1432-6/l2240-2
